OWN A PIECE OF CYCLING HISTORY

This bike is one of the first built by Craig Calfee. It started life as a Carbonframes Sapphire in 1989, serial number SA0018. It was sold to Al Budris as his personal ride and the first demonstrator for his CycleCraft bike shop in Cupertino, CA. Craig remembers he had Greg Lemond take it for a quick spin from Al’s shop, marking the beginning of Calfee’s relationship with Lemond that led to the Tour de France and their business relationship.

This 60 cm frameset is Craig’s original design that remains in production today as the Calfee Tetra Classic. In addition to its lugged joints and titanium dropouts, this example features Craig’s handcrafted all-carbon seatpost binder that works as well today as it did in 1989! In 2004, Craig did a complete update to Tetra Pro specs, including reinforced bottom shell, carbon cable guides and water bottle cage mounts. The frame and Easton EC90 SL carbon fork are finished in Blue Pearl Translucent and topped with Craig’s hand-wrapped one-piece carbon BarStem painted Jersey Yellow. A Phil Wood titanium bottom bracket and Chris King headset round out the frameset. The paint is immaculate, without a scratch or even a pock mark on the chainstay.

The bike is built up with a Campagnolo Record 10-speed gruppo including a Compact Carbon 175mm 50/34 crankset plus spare 36-tooth small ring, USE Pave carbon seatpost, Selle Italia Flite Evolution Titanium-Carbon saddle, and a Reynolds carbon wheelset with 11-29 cassette and Vredestein Fortezza TriComp 700x23 clincher tires w/yellow sidewalls.

Own a piece of history that looks and rides as if it were brand new! Check out my full collection of photos in the Gallery and Craig's comment in the Calfee Owners Facebook group.

The bike can be seen at Matt LaPrade's AE Service Course shop in Folsom, CA.

Priced at $5,000 USD.
